What if God asked you to turn your home into a church? Would you be
willing?
Pastor Enoch is one of the pastors we are working with
in Port-Au-Prince, and he felt called to do just that. Eventually, he moved
into another home just above his first one, but for a while, his home –
housing himself, his wife and the eight children they care for – was
also a church.
During the earthquake, the church remained standing but
not without a fight. Its roof caved in, and some of the walls were
cracked and crumbling.
With the shaking has come a great turning
to God here in the Haitian communities. When you talk with locals one
of their main prayer requests is to pray they do not fall away or to
pray they can understand more of the Bible. It is an amazing and
humbling thing to witness when you see all the physical needs and hear
the Haitians say their biggest needs are spiritual ones. We have so
much to learn from them.
As many come to Christ, Pastor Enoch
recognizes the need for his church to expand. His immediate vision is to
take down dividing walls to allow more church growth. So, we sent in a
couple of teams to bring down the walls and bring in supplies for a
roof. There have been delays and frustrations with planning and building,
but the project is underway. Currently, we are getting the rest of the
supplies to the church, so the covering can be finished.
Pastor
Enoch is a visionary man, and his long-term hope is to purchase a
forty acre field that will be home to a new church, a school, an
orphanage and a broadcast station.
The need for an orphanage is
especially great, since the nearby one is full and there are still
hundreds of children in need of a home. He also has a high interest in
the community’s children learning English, knowing it will give them a
greater chance of finding work in the future.
